Delta’s New Subscription Service Offers Earlier Access to Overhead Bins

Ever argue with a fellow passenger about overhead bin space?

It’s one of the biggest issues of air travel and, in fact, the disagreements aren’t necessarily between fellow travelers. Sometimes, it can get pretty heated between passengers and crew.

Now Delta Air Lines is trying to change that.

Delta is offering a new annual subscription service that gets you priority boarding – sort of – and the chance to access overhead bins quicker than other passengers.

We say ‘sort of’ because the $59 service for the SkyMiles Select plan gets you Main Cabin 1 boarding status, but not status to board first.

Main Cabin 1 is currently the sixth group to enter the plane after pre-boarders, DeltaOne and Diamond Medallion members, first-class and Premium Select, and then Delta Comfort+ passengers. Come Jan. 23, Main Cabin 1 passengers will be fifth in line.

“Customers have told us they want more ways to access benefits when traveling with Delta, and we know priority boarding is a valuable benefit as it gives customers more time to get settled before their flight,” Delta spokeswoman Kathryn Steele told airline-news/2019/10/17/delta-offers-59-annual-subscription-buys-you-overhead-bin-space/4006629002/” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow noopener noreferrer”>USA TODAY via email. “We’ll look to expand the types of benefits they can access through SkyMiles Select based on feedback from this test.”

The $59 gets you Main Cabin 1 boarding, eight free drink vouchers and a limited edition bag tag.

“It was very frightening for this to unfold in mid-air,” one witness said. “It was a violent confrontation and an area of the cabin was covered in blood. The cabin crew did a great job to try to contain it. But some were reduced to tears because of what unfolded.”

The flight landed in Edinburgh, Scotland from Copenhagen at around 1:30 in the afternoon, where the two men were quickly detained by police.

A spokesman for the airline said “We can confirm that flight EZY6980 from Copenhagen to Edinburgh was met by police on arrival as a result of two passengers on board behaving disruptively.

“EasyJet’s cabin crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations and to act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers is not compromised at any time.

The spokesman added, “The safety and wellbeing of customers and crew is our highest priority.”

It is unclear at this time what had prompted the fight. According to a spokesman for the Scotland Police, the two men, aged 28 and 42, are charged for breach of the peace.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal,” the spokesman said.
