How to Get to Know a Place Before You Even Arrive

Particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals are anxious to get out and travel the world. Discovering new places is an exciting and educational experience, but it can also be stressful when you do not know the area. Before traveling, there are a few ways you can get to know a place before you even arrive.

Figure Out Transportation

When making travel plans, according to the Rochester Institute of Technology, it is a good idea to discuss how you will find transportation. If you are flying, do you plan on getting a rental car or using public transportation? When using public transportation, you can search your destinations’ available fees and routes. It is wise to always keep cash or coins on hand to pay for your transportation fees. Studying the available options will give you the confidence to find your way in a new area and give you a better experience.

Explore Local Businesses

Before you step out the door for your vacation, you can research the local businesses that will be in your destination’s area. This way you can plan what shops and restaurants you want to visit and schedule times to go see them. Sites like Trustpilot have millions of reviews of local businesses like restaurants. Planning the restaurants and shops you go to will help you visit the best places the destination has to offer rather than wandering around aimlessly and having a mediocre experience.

Study Their Language

If you are traveling to a foreign country or an area where the predominant language is different from what you know, according to Go Overseas, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the language. Study key phrases like “How much?”, “Where is the bathroom?”, “Where is …?”, etc.  Familiarizing yourself with the language will help you communicate with locals for instructions or directions to get around. It will also help you understand street signs or maps in case you get lost and need to ask for directions. You will find yourself much more relaxed and confident when you know how to communicate and ask for assistance when needed.

Traveling is always an exciting adventure. To capitalize on your experience, take time to get to know the area you will be traveling to. You can do this by planning your transportation, researching local businesses, and familiarizing yourself with the local language. Interactions you have with locals and the experiences you come away with will be much richer because you knew the place before you arrived.
