How to Get Through the Long Stretches of a Road Trip

Road trips can be an amazing way to take a vacation. You have control over where you go, when, and how quickly you get there (to an extent – no speeding). Long stretches of driving are a normal part of a road trip that you need to be prepared for. So what are some things you can do to get through them?

Bring Snack

If you planned out your road trip route before you left, you may have planned where you’ll stop for food and gas. There’s something about those long stretches of road between stops that can make you a bit peckish though. Having some favorite road trip snacks on hand can be a great way to tide yourself over until your next planned stop. Snacking can help you keep your mind more alert and your body energized, which can be tough when all you’re doing is staring ahead as you sit. Remember to bring plenty of water to wash it down!

Listen to Podcasts

While some of us have fascinating inner monologues, the rest of us may prefer something else to give some attention to instead of the next section of scenery that is the same as the one before it. Listening to podcasts can be a great way to spend some of that drive time. There are nearly a million podcasts available on the internet with millions of episodes. With all that variety, you’re bound to find something that piques your interest.

Take Breaks

No matter how well you planned out your route, sometimes you just need to stop and take a break. This is especially crucial if you catch yourself getting drowsy, but can also be helpful if you’re just getting a little stiff from staying in one place for so long. Ideally, it’s best to pull into the next rest stop you come to. Otherwise, make sure you’re pulled far enough off the road that you won’t be a danger to other drivers and so that they’ll be less of a danger to you. You can then take a quick nap or do some exercises to get your blood moving before you get going again.

Getting through the long stretches of road trips can be monotonous and downright difficult if you aren’t properly prepared for them. Snacks, podcasts, and breaks can be great ways to make sure you enjoy them. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you prioritize your safety so you can reach your destination and enjoy it to the fullest.
