National 9/11 Museum Says NO To Aviation’s First Responders

The Memorial’s Management Says No Discounts for Airline Crewmembers

In less than a month, it will be 15th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center which occurred on September 11th, 2001. Understandably, many crew members still find it very difficult if not impossible to visit the memorial while those who do visit are often shocked to learn that there is no special discount offered to crew who are truly first responders and flight attendants played a key role in relaying important information during the attack that was used to piece together the details of the crime.

The National 9/11 Memorial is a very sacred place to airline crew members whose lives and careers were forever changed by the tragic events. Since the opening of the 9/11 Memorial Museum, many crew members have expressed their disappointment to us that a special consideration discount is not offered to airline crew while it is offered to several other groups who were also directly affected by the tragedy. After delivering over 1000 of your letters and speaking with the 9/11 Memorial staff on countless conference calls, they have decided to deny our request for an ongoing special consideration discount for airline crew members.

It’s time for the museum to change their policy and begin recognize of role flight attendants and pilots serve everyday in keeping the skies safe. They must also not forget that one particular flight attendants, Betty Ong, relayed valuable real-time information to personnel on the ground during the attack.

We Tried to Reason with the Museum

Last year, we delivered over 1000 letters to the 9/11 Memorial Museum on behalf of crew members throughout the US asking the staff to properly recognize Aviation’s First Responders by providing special admission consideration to the museum. The letters were delivered physically and sent electronically as well. For over a month, we did not receive a response from the museum staff although our tracked emails were opened hundreds of times.

SAVVY STEWS RESPECTFULLY ENCOURAGES THE 9/11 MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM TO RECOGNIZE AIRLINE CREWMEMBERS AS “FIRST RESPONDERS.”

Finally, we were able to make contact with a member of the museum’s staff, Anthony Gardner and proceeded to discuss the situation with him via approximately ten telephone calls over the next year. Finally, we realized they were just not interested in doing the right thing.

We delivered about 1400 letters to the Memorial which arrived to them on September 12th, 2015.

Airline Crew Rightfully Feel Slighted

At this point, there is no discount of any kind offered specifically to airline personnel. Although discounted and free admission are rightfully offered to several other groups related to the tragedy, the same courtesy is not extended to airline crew-members. We never asked for free, just the respectful courtesy of a discount. They said no.

9/11 Special Consideration

What The Museum Proposed to Do

  • Offer a crew web-portal to sign up for Tuesday only free tickets (Free tickets are offered to everyone on Tuesdays)
  • Create special events during the week of National Aviation Day, August 19th (They are doing this) Which includes free admission during that week.

We explained to them that crew members lay over in New York 7 days a week and never know from month to month when they may be able to visit the city. Mr. Gardner explained that a discount to airline crew members was just not something they could do revenue-wise. We disagree and feel that a discount will actually benefit the museum through increased visits from airline staff.
