Spirit Airlines Adds More Caribbean Routes to International Network

WHY IT RATES: Selling the Caribbean is a major factor in the success of travel agents, and the addition of more flights to the region by Spirit will help provide clients with more options.—Donald Wood, Breaking News Senior Writer.

Just when the winter chill will be ready to take hold, here come more options for a warm tropical escape with Spirit Airlines. Beginning November 8, Spirit will start daily nonstop service from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. On December 20, Spirit will grow again and begin nonstop seasonal service between Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) and Sangster International Airport (MJB) in Montego Bay, Jamaica, running three times weekly.

The additions offer affordable fares for travel to stay connected with family or for fun getaways in the exotic Caribbean.

The expansion announcement will mark the first direct international service from Newark for Spirit and will serve as a direct connection for friends and relatives living in both the Tri-State area and the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Detroit’s new service to Montego Bay will complement existing international service from the Motor City to Cancun, Mexico. Both new routes will strengthen Spirit’s growing network. In June, Spirit announced it was launching nearly a dozen new routes from Orlando, Florida to Latin America and the Caribbean.

“We are so excited to offer both the Newark and Detroit areas low fares to some of the most wonderful countries in the world,” said Mark Kopczak, Spirit Airlines’ Vice President of Network Planning. “Both Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are known for their hospitality and beauty and are incredible options for winter vacations or family reunions. Spirit continues to prove itself as a go-to airline for quality affordable service to the Caribbean and Latin America.”

With Spirit’s expanding network, the airline continues to improve on its on-time performance and Guest satisfaction, while building upon its larger commitment to invest in the Guest experience. The airline recently announced state-of-the-art high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity will be installed on its entire fleet by summer of 2019.

Recent Department of Transportation data shows Spirit Airlines among the top carriers for on-time performance and baggage handling.
